Rapid City Area Schools

Test-Out Program

2008

Test-out sessions are now being set up for students to be enrolled in grades 9-12 during the 2008-2009 school year.  Any student enrolled in the district may test out of courses approved by the South Dakota Department of Education subject to the conditions outlined in Rapid City Area Schools District Code: IHH.

State-Created End of Course exams include: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Geography, and U.S. Government.  Please keep in mind these are full-year course exams and are taken on-line facilitated by Rapid City Area Schools.

Rapid City Area Schools will also be offering Information and Communication Technology (formerly: Computer Studies) I, Spanish I, Civics, English 9, English 10, and Personal Finance test out exams.  The Information and Communication Technology 1 exam is a combination of hands-on computer skills and paper/pencil, Civics, and Personal Finance exams are paper/pencil.  These are semester courses and .5 credit will be awarded if the student successfully challenges the course. Spanish I, English 9 and English 10 are paper/pencil exam.  These are full-year courses and 1.0 credit will be awarded if the student successfully challenges the course.

The tests are comprehensive and assess factual knowledge as well as process and performance skills appropriate to the subject.  Test pre-registration will be coordinated through the Office of Curriculum, Assessment, Instruction, and Gifted Education Services.  Pre-registration will be done between Thursday, May 15 – Friday, May 30.  YOU MUST BE REGISTERED BY FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008, 5:00PM.  No registrations will be accepted after that date.  Walk-ins will not be allowed the day of the tests.  There is no cost to the student to challenge a course.

Students will be allowed to challenge a specific course only once.  A score of 85 percent or better will successfully challenge a course and a credit will be awarded.  Successfully challenged courses will be recorded as a pass on official student transcripts and will not affect the student’s official grade point average.  Attached is District Code: IHH outlining the procedure to obtain a letter grade for scholarship purposes.  The letter grade will not affect the student official grade point average and class ranking per South Dakota Department of Education.
